PROGRAM OVERVIEW

NOYCE Focus on STEM

The Department of Early Childhood and Childhood Education (ECCE) offers two Minor-to-Masters (MtM) programs leading to NYS initial teaching certification. You must have declared the Education Minor to apply. Students accepted into the program begin taking coursework as a Lehman undergraduate while pursuing a bachelors degree. Upon graduating from Lehman with a liberal arts bachelor’s degree, students continue their studies as a graduate student for approximately 3 semesters.

 

At the program’s end, students will have earned a Masters of Science in Education (MSEd) & an initial New York State teaching certification in either:

  • Early Childhood Education (Birth to Grade 2) with/without a bilingual extension
  • Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) with/without a bilingual extension

 

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Interested students apply when they are:

  • 1. currently enrolled as an undergraduate student;
  • 2. declared the education minor in iDeclare: ECCE-MIN M-12 Subplan
  • 3. pursuing a liberal arts degree and have completed approximately 90 credits towards their bachelor's degree;
  • 4. AND completed the pre-requisite coursework and earned a grade of B or above in each class. The coursework includes ECE 301, 302, 311, 304.

Interested candidates must apply to either the Early Childhood Minor-to-Masters Program OR Childhood Minor-to-Masters Program.

 

Coursework

After gaining admittance to either the Early Childhood or Childhood Minor-to-Masters Program, 12-credits of 400-level education coursework must be completed. This coursework is completed during the last two semesters of the undergraduate degree. The coursework for each program is outlined below.

Upon applying to the graduate program students continue their studies in Masters of Science in Education (MSEd) program. Students continue taking graduate-level coursework for approximately three semesters, and the necessary state-mandated exams. Upon completing the program, candidates earn an MSEd & an initial New York State teaching certification in either:

  • Early Childhood Education (Birth to Grade 2) with/without a bilingual extension
  • Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) with/without a bilingual extension

DEADLINES

Applications to the Minor-to-Masters program are accepted twice during the academic year. Undergraduate students can apply to the Minor-to-Masters program during the semester they are completing their 300-level coursework.  Dates are listed below. 

FALL APPLICATIONS are for students who intend to begin the undergraduate, 400-level coursework during spring semester.

  • APPLICATION DUE: NOVEMBER 10th
  • ACCEPTANCE DATE: DECEMBER 15th

SPRING APPLICATIONS are for students who intend to begin the undergraduate, 400-level coursework during fall semester.

  • COMPLETED APPLICATION DUE: APRIL 16 at Midnight

You will be notified of acceptance or denial for admission to the program by: May 11th.
