The Hechinger Report, a web-based news publication that covers education, published an opinion essay by a Alice Michelle Augustine, Director of Campus Honors and Scholar Engagement, on the power of prestigious academic scholarships and awards to change lives—especially for low-income and first-generation college students. Focusing on a Lehman alumna who won a Fulbright to study in Spain, she explained how such awards not only reward students’ excellence, but validate their ambitions and set them on a path to professional success. Augustine argued that as applicants diversify, so must screening and award committees, so they can recognize talent and promise in students who historically have been underrepresented among awardees.
