Lehman College was hard to miss at the 2025 SOMOS Puerto Rico Conference, which featured presentations and events by faculty and senior leadership. The annual event draws politicians, policymakers, and powerbrokers together to discuss issues and legislation impacting Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican communities.

“As a college rooted in the Bronx, the participation of our students, faculty, and staff reflects who we are and what we stand for,” said President Fernando Delgado. The Bronx boasts the highest concentration of Puerto Ricans in the nation.

This year, Lehman’s presenters at SOMOS participated in sessions addressing equity, economic resilience, and culture. Brandon Begarly, Assistant Vice President of Research Administration and Strategy, joined New York education and public policy experts to spotlight strategies for improving student success and strengthening communities in New York and Puerto Rico. Lehman economist Alexander Núñez-Torres and José Higuera López, Director of the CUNY Mexican Studies Institute at Lehman, discussed ways Latino communities can financially empower themselves.

The Institute also commissioned the video installation "No es extraño este sitio para la danza," directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Noelia Quintero Herencia, which explores the history of creativity and resistance among Puerto Rican communities in New York.

“I am proud that Lehman College continues to play an active role in SOMOS El Futuro,” said President Fernando Delgado. “This gathering is more than a conference; it’s a movement that uplifts voices, builds partnerships, and reinforces our shared responsibility to expand access, equity, and opportunity.”
