Lehman College and Verizon recently convened public officials, educators, tech leaders, and community advocates for Everyday AI: Shaping Policy, Health, and Education Together—a half-day conference examining the transformative role of artificial intelligence across key sectors in The Bronx.

Held on Lehman’s campus, the event featured three expert-led sessions focused on AI’s impact in education, healthcare, and public policy. Conversations explored equitable access to AI tools, ethical innovation, and strategies to prepare Bronx residents for a rapidly evolving technological workforce. Lehman is actively expanding its academic offerings to help meet these challenges.

"It's important that people learn how to use AI as a tool to uplift, and with our new Data Science & AI program—together with partners like Verizon—Lehman is opening doors to skills, careers, and upward mobility, right here in the Bronx,” said President Fernando Delgado.

Professor of Biological Sciences Stephen Redenti showcased his startup company, Bronx Biosciences LLC, also known as Rexo, which is leveraging AI to develop effective cancer treatments.

Speakers included Assemblymembers Clyde Vanel and Landon Dais; Lisa Sorin, President of the Bronx Chamber of Commerce; Jonathan Metallo and April Horton of Verizon; community leaders Debbie Roman of Per Scholas and Josh Sach of Meela; as well as faculty and leaders from Lehman College.

A key highlight of the event was the announcement of the Everyday AI Research Award, a new initiative funded by the Verizon Foundation. The award will support two Bronx-based college students conducting original AI research, each receiving $2,000, with $500 awarded to their faculty mentors.

This event marks a growing partnership between Lehman College and Verizon, dedicated to ensuring that AI becomes a catalyst for community empowerment and inclusive progress.
