AI Futures features Jonah Brucker-Cohen on Machines and Control

September 22, 2025

In a recent episode of AI Futures, Associate Professor of Media Studies Jonah Brucker-Cohen discussed the ways his work uses technology's own limitations and biases to reveal how humans interact with it, and how our devices might behave if they were more like us. Employing AI facial recognition software, for example, his "SAVR A.I.," is a Chrome browser plugin  that prevents users from saving a Google Doc unless it's free of grammatical or spelling mistakes. Another project, "Expression of Memory," functions like an emotionally aware calendar that uses sentiment analysis to log how a user felt on a given date. Despite the whimsical nature of his projects, they pose serious questions about trust, agency, and the balance between users and the machines we take for granted.
