Build Your Own Path Through Food Humanities
Bronx Food Humanities combines credit-bearing coursework with hands-on, paid experience in the Bronx food community. Requirements are flexible, with multiple entry points, so you can join no matter where you are in your degree.

Program Requirements
| Coursework | Experiential Learning & Practical Training |
| Introduction to Bronx Food Humanities (3 credits) | Transfer year summer research intensive |
| One experiential learning elective (3–7 credits) | Funded internship with a Bronx nonprofit |
| Total: At least 3 courses, 9–13 credits | At least one internship |
Upon completion, you'll earn digital badges recognizing your experiential and practical learning, plus a certificate of completion — portable credentials that show employers and graduate programs exactly what you've done, not just what you've studied.
Paid Internships
Too many students have to choose between unpaid enrichment opportunities and paying jobs. Bronx Food Humanities solves that problem. Interns receive a $6,000 stipend and work under the guidance of experienced NYBG staff, with scheduling coordinated by the program's Project Coordinator.
Internships with Bronx Community Organizations
You can also intern with food justice and cultural organizations across the Bronx. In our first year, James Baldwin Outdoor Learning Center, New Roots, Randalls Island Urban Farm, and ReBorn Farms hosted interns, along with the New York Botanical Garden. See our full list of partner organizations.
Placements are coordinated through Lehman's Arts and Humanities Internship and Experiential Learning Program, which has already placed students in 132 internships — the vast majority paid — with 120 partner organizations.
Professional Development and Networking
Students have access to professional development opportunities throughout the year, including one-on-one meetings with the program team to discuss their academic and career goals. They are also invited to attend events featuring food humanities scholars and practitioners and have opportunities to build professional networks with partners both within and beyond the participating institutions.
Student Ambassadors
Students who complete the summer internship or the Bronx Food Humanities core course are eligible to apply to serve as Student Ambassadors. Selected students receive a $1,000 stipend over nine months to help promote the program, recruit new participants, and mentor incoming students, sharing their experiences and helping build a community across participating campuses.
