Will AI Make Us Stupid? Maeve Adams Weighs in at Salon

An opinion piece in Salon on the dangers of substituting AI for human teachers cited Maeve Adams, assistant professor of English, who offered some optimistic thoughts on the relationship between critical thinking and engagement with other people.

“‘Critical thinking is an essentially social activity that requires we be accountable to other humans,’” she told author Amanda Marcotte. She noted that while social media platforms “‘can easily short circuit our sense of human accountability and responsibility,’” people ultimately recognize that AIs lack the traits required to promote satisfying interactions and critical thinking. They cannot truly communicate, because they do not possess interests, feelings, ideas, and a desire to understand.
