February 9, 2026

Wesley Pitts has been appointed dean of Lehman College’s School of Education. A faculty member for nearly two decades, Pitts has held several key leadership roles, including chair of the Middle and High School Education Department, co-coordinator of the Graduate Program in Science Education, and coordinator of the Teacher Opportunity Program, the NYC Teaching Fellows Program in Science Education, and the Computer Science Education Program.

A former New York City chemistry teacher, Pitts’ research examines how urban school settings shape student success in science education and science teacher preparation. He has served as PI or co-PI on grants totaling more than $7 million and has published widely, including the co-authored book Latinas Pathways to STEM: Exploring Contextual Mitigating Factors. He is a four-time CUNY alumnus, having earned a bachelor’s in biochemistry, a master’s in pure mathematics, and both a master’s and a doctorate in urban science education. He is also a graduate of the Association of American College and Universities Project Kaleidoscope STEM Leadership Institute.

He previously taught at the College of New Rochelle, CCNY, and the University of Pennsylvania, and holds a second appointment in the Urban Education doctoral program at the CUNY Graduate Center.
