New Health Study Shows Academic Success Predicted by Food Security, Adequate Sleep

Instant ramen and all-night study sessions may be college cliches, but three faculty members in the Department of Heath Equity, Administration, and Technology are taking a serious look at how health and income disparities can amplify students’ food insecurity and sleep quality—which, in turn, impact academic success. In their study, Assistant Professor William Suarez-Gomez, Adjunct Assistant Professor Latoya Callender, and Associate Professor Collette Brown found that inadequate sleep and food predict both a higher body mass index and a lower grade point average.
