Associate Professor of Physics (and PBS Spacetime host) Matthew O’Dowd has been named a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) by its Forum on Outreach and Engaging the Public.

The honor is beyond gratifying, O’Dowd said. “I think it’s a great reflection on Lehman College, which has supported me on all of these fronts, as they do many of the incredible researchers and teachers on our faculty.”

APS Fellows are selected based on their contributions to research and services to advance the sciences. O’Dowd was chosen, the citation reads, for his “years of influential science education using visual media—including documentaries, online videos, and podcasts—especially as the writer and host of the YouTube channel PBS Spacetime.” Last year, O’Dowd received the APS Nicholson Medal for public outreach.

The preeminent 125-year-old member organization publishes 19 journals and represents over 50,000 physicists in the U.S. and around the world working in industry, academia, and national laboratories.
