Democracy by the Numbers: Lehman Sociologist Shapes New Numeracy Collection

Professor of Sociology Esther Wilder and colleagues from CUNY co-edited the latest issue of Numeracy, the official journal of the National Numeracy Network. Titled “Teaching Numeracy for Social Justice: Educational Equity,” the issue collects essays from different disciplines examining the need for strong numeracy—or quantitative reasoning—education, and its power to to promote equity, empowerment, and democratic participation.
“It is our hope that the work presented here will help advance the teaching of numeracy in ways that promote equity, inclusion, and social justice,” Wilder said in a LinkedIn post announcing the new issue.
Wilder’s research and curriculum development in quantitative reasoning have been supported by major grants from the National Science Foundation since 2018.
