This month marks the 25th anniversary of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and Lehman College has been recognized as a top-producing institution throughout the program's history—ranking among the top 25 medium-sized colleges and universities nationwide.

“Over the last several years, more than 140 Lehman students have collectively earned over $400,000 through Gilman Scholarships alone,” said Eunice Cuevas, associate director of Global Engagement. "These awards have enabled students to live and study in countries such as Morocco, Japan, Spain, France, South Korea, Greece, and many more. They return not only with academic credits, but with global insight, leadership skills, and a renewed belief in what is possible.”

The Gilman International Scholarship, administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and named for Congressman Benjamin A. Gilman, provides merit-based awards of up to $5,000 to American undergraduate students with high financial need. Since its launch in 2001, the program has supported more than 50,000 students pursuing credit-bearing study and internship opportunities abroad, including many first-generation college students, Pell Grant recipients, and students from small towns or rural communities.

The recognition highlights the accomplishments of Lehman's ambitious students and the College’s success shepherding them through the rigorous application process.

“From the moment we begin advising students to the day we welcome them home, we witness profound growth in their confidence, independence, and sense of purpose,” said Cuevas. “They return with sharpened perspectives, a deeper understanding of the world, and greater certainty in themselves as they take their next steps.”

The most recent Gilman scholars are Amna Ishaq and Prescila Otoo. Ishaq spent the winter term in Morocco, and Otoo will study in Barcelona next fall.
