With Ivy.ai, Leonard Lief Library Is a Pioneer

For decades, Lehman College has been a leader in education technology, and the Leonard Lief Library is no exception. The library’s resident technology and electronic services experts Michelle Ehrenpreis and John DeLooper published an article, currently in pre-print, in the Journal of Academic Library Services about Lehman’s Ivy.ai chatbot—which was the first of its kind to have documented use in an academic library. Designed to help users find information on the library’s website, the chatbot also provided valuable insights into the types of questions students were asking. In April 2023, Ivy.ai was upgraded with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Ehrenpreis and DeLooper assessed how the enhanced chatbot performed, highlighting areas where it could still improve, and offering advice for other libraries looking to try similar technology.
