Prevention spotlighted Lehman research led by Professor of Exercise Science Brad Schoenfeld and faculty in the Human Performance and Fitness Lab, which found that shorter strength training sessions can still be effective, and suggested that even the busiest people can develop a healthy exercise routine without spending hours at the gym.

Their study, published in September, showed that a twice-weekly, 30-minute, single-set weightlifting routine produced measurable gains in muscle size and strength.

“Resistance training has a plethora of benefits for almost all organ systems,” Schoenfeld told Prevention. “This includes improved ability to carry out tasks of everyday living, enhanced metabolic function, better cardiovascular health, better mental health, and greater injury resistance, among others.”
