A new book by Associate Professor Mila Burns, (Latin American and Latino Studies, Lehman/ History, CUNY Graduate Center) exposes the key role of Chile's neighbor Brazil in the 1973 coup d'etat that brought Augusto Pinochet to power.

While histories of this period frequently focus on U.S. support of the coup, Dictatorship Across Borders: Brazil, Chile, and the South American Cold War draws on newly-declassified documents and personal accounts to show how Brazil's own dictatorship was quietly instrumental in the planning and execution of Pinochet's takeover and brutal 17-year regime.

Burns, a former journalist and alumna of the CUNY Graduate Center, was recognized last spring for her early career accomplishments.

Register for a lunchtime book talk on Sept. 17 at the Leonard Lief Library.
