Distinguished Professor of Philosophy Naomi Zack joined the EdUp Provost podcast to discuss her new book, Multiplicity, Belonging, and Free Speech in US Higher Education: Thriving through Current Crises (Rowman and Littlefield). Among the topics she and host Gregor Thuswaldner discussed is her argument for moving beyond traditional diversity and affirmative action models, which she says can be too narrow, and instead adopting a “multiplicity” framework that recognizes the many layers of student identity. Highlighting the role of the humanities in supporting human well-being, Zack also explains why, in the face of a coming "enrollment cliff" and growing skepticism about the usefulness of a college degree, institutions should reframe the value of higher education in terms of personal and intellectual development rather than a means of job preparation.
