Professor of Africana Studies Mark Christian will read from his new biography of Frederick Douglass at a lunchtime talk on February 26 at the Leonard Lief Library. Frederick Douglass: A Life in American History is Christian's most recent contribution to the Bloomsbury series Black History Lives.

The biography engages with history and wrestles with biases, falsehoods, and unknown facts to tell Douglass' story. Taking a comprehensive look at Douglass' life, the book delves into his time as an enslaved African American, his escape, his experiences as a prominent orator and champion of Black rights, and the influence he had on shaping society of the time.

Christian has written extensively on influential 19th and 20th century African Americans and recently spoke about Marcus Garvey on BBC's Radio1 Xtra.

The reading is open to the Lehman community and the public. Register here.

In addition, Christian will be giving a late afternoon reading on February 19th at the CUNY Graduate Center.
