Lehman Prof Brings Dominican Music to The Conversation

A new article in The Conversation by Adjunct Assistant Professor traces the remarkable rise of the music and dance genre Bachata from the Dominican Republic's impoverished Afro-Latino communities to its current status as a truly international genre. Burgos Matos, who teaches in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies and is a researcher at CUNY's Dominican Studies Institute, calls attention to the role of immigration and politics in the genre's expansion and the way it has changed—and been changed by—pop and Hip Hop as it spread across the globe. In 2019, Bachata was placed on UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage
