Just in time for Thanksgiving, volunteers from Lehman College and Montefiore Einstein came out in force to pack hundreds of bags for the sixth annual Thanksgiving Food Giveaway, “Lehman Stands with Students,” on Thursday Nov. 20.

“I’m filled with happiness that we have a set of partnerships in the Bronx that supports our students and the broader community,” said Lehman College President Fernando Delgado, who addressed the attendees.

Through the College’s partnerships with Montefiore Einstein, Chef’s Warehouse, and others, the event provided 300 Lehman students with fresh produce and non-perishable items—all the fixings needed for a traditional Thanksgiving family meal. In addition, more than 20 turkeys and chickens were raffled.

“Here at Lehman—this partnership—nothing makes us prouder than being able to give back,” said Montefiore Einstein Vice President Marcus Crespo.

The Thanksgiving Food Giveaway is a project of the Lehman College Basic Needs Center, which offers  wraparound programs designed to meet students’ basic needs outside the classroom so they can stay focused on their studies. Services include the Herbert H. Lehman Food Bank, the Career Closet, emergency grants for housing and utilities, MetroCards, and more.

Staff from Lehman’s Health and Wellness Center and the Counseling Center were also on hand to help students learn strategies for managing holiday stress and practicing self-care.
