On October 23, Lehman College alumna Miryam Juarez '25 led Mariachi Perla Mexicana de NYC in a performance at Madison Square Garden for the New York Rangers' Hispanic Heritage Night. Juarez, the youngest female director of a mariachi ensemble in New York City, heads a vibrant group of first-generation Mexican American musicians dedicated to preserving the rich traditions of Mexican music while bringing a fresh, modern energy to the stage.

“Individually, we’ve all worked hard and accomplished a lot, but this is the first time we’ve come together as a group of young, first-generation Mexican Americans to perform on such a big stage,” said Juarez.

The ensemble’s dedication and collaboration—as well as shared experience and heritage—laid the groundwork for the opportunity to perform.

“I was a little nervous, but incredibly proud of this moment,” Juarez added. “I hope this performance opens doors for us and inspires others to celebrate our culture wherever they are.”
