Gomez-Gonzalez, takes a close look at the success of global poverty-reduction programs. Gomez-Gonzalez and his colleague Jacobo Campo Robledo of the Externado University of Colombia highlight the sharp drop in extreme poverty worldwide—from more than 42 percent of the population in 1981 to about 10 percent in 2015—while questioning the limits of growth and conditional cash transfers like Mexico’s Progresa and Colombia’s Familias en Acción.
