David Schwittek Speaks to AP News about Mamdani's Campaign Design

Associate Professor of Art David Schwittek, who specializes in digital and graphic design, spoke to AP News about the aesthetics of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's winning campaign.  

In politics, successful design choices deliberately connect to constituencies, emotions, and ideas. The colors and graphics in Mamdani’s posters, for example, “evoke the working-class fabric of New York City: the bodegas, taxi cabs, and halal carts that not only sustain the city but also reflect its cultural richness,” Schwittek said.

“In a sea of sanitized political messaging, Mamdani’s visuals stand out because they mean something,” he added.
