A new book by Javier A. Hernández '09, who earned a master's degree in education from Lehman, reframes Puerto Rican history to center the island and the people who have called it home for millennia. The Patriotic History of Puerto Rico for Young Readers (Gaviota) covers Puerto Rican history from the Taínos and the Grito de Lares to the commonwealth's founding and the arrival of the Fiscal Control Board.

Colorfully illustrated and available in both Spanish and English, the book presents historical narratives from a Puerto Rican perspective and includes profiles of key figures like Ramón Emeterio Betances and Pedro Albizu Campos, chapter review questions, and a glossary of terms such as colonialism and sovereignty.
