Important Dates & Information

  • Click here for Permission for Arabic, Chinese and Japanese courses.

Enrollment Information

Most students must gain departmental permission to register for a language course, but not all. Before making an appointment, read the exceptions detailed below to determine if you need an appointment and what to do.

If you have never taken a language at Lehman before, read the instructions HERE to get an appointment on Navigate.

If you have taken a language at Lehman, read the section below to get permission for your class.

What To Enter in Navigate:

  1. Click the Appointments Icon.
  2. Click Schedule an Appointment.
  3. For "What type of appointment would you like to schedule?" choose Departmental Academic Advisement - Major/Minor.
  4. For "Service", choose Languages and Literatures.
  5. Skip the date and click Find Available Time.
  6. Pick the time that works best for you.
  7. If you need to cancel the appointment, please do so in Navigate before the appointment so another student can reserve it.

Drop-In Dates (no Navigate appointment necessary; however, this is not guaranteed and is based on availability [first come, first served]). Some drop-in dates can be found in Navigate, others will be on our Advising Schedule.

Exceptions for Continuing Students:

  1. If you are currently enrolled in, or have previously completed, a 111- or 113-level language course:

    • You do not need an appointment or permission to enroll in the corresponding 112 or 114 course for Fall 2025 — registration will be permitted automatically.

  2. If you’ve already been granted permission but can't enroll:

If you've already received permission to enroll but are still seeing a “departmental approval required” message:

    1. Cancel your Navigate appointment (if you’ve already made one).

    2. Email us at Languages.Literatures@lehman.cuny.edu with the following details:

      • Your Full name

      • Your EMPLID#

      • The semester you’re trying to enroll in (Summer or Fall)

      • The language course you are currently taking or have taken at Lehman

  3. If you took your language course at another college or in another country, you are considered a transfer student. Please refer to the Summer and Fall 2025 Registration schedule here and schedule a Navigate appointment instead.

Permissions for Japanese, Chinese, Arabic and Irish:

  • Asako.Tochika@lehman.cuny.edu will handle permission/advisement for Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic courses. This includes students who want to e-permit a class in those languages.
  • Students currently enrolled in Japanese will receive permission from their professor.

For Placement Exams

Please schedule an appointment with a Language Advisor in Navigate first. A language advisor can best determine who needs a placement exam, as not everyone needs to take one.

For E-Permits

Please schedule an appointment in Navigate with Oscar Martin for all languages except Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. Please email Asako.Tochika@lehman.cuny.edu for e-Permits for Arabic, Chinese and Japanese.
