Welcome to the Department of Journalism and Media Studies. We invite you to join us in any of our three majors/minors. These include Film and Television Studies (FTS), Multimedia Journalism (JRN) and Media Communication Studies (MCS).

Film and TV Studies  (FTS)

FTS majors focus on the theory, practice, artistic creation of cinema and other moving image media. They examine the history of cinema, genres, the methodologies for study, close analysis of cinematic works, theoretical approaches to film and the practice of camera, lighting, editing, audio production. This major is for you if you wish to pursue a graduate degree or seek employment in various moving image industries. Film students may seek advanced degrees in cinema studies and film production or seek employment in film and television industries. Students focusing on video production can seek employment in the various careers in live production, sports media, streaming media and traditional television industry fields.

Multimedia Journalism (JRN)

JRN majors explore the future of multimedia journalism in the heart of New York City. As a JRN major, you will embrace your passion for storytelling and fact-finding with our cutting-edge program, recently redesigned to incorporate more video and audio courses. Our students report and document the stories that need telling with experienced media professionals as their guides. Students publish across diverse  media: print, audio, video, and data. They blend aesthetics with information for impactful digital web and social media design. Internships with global brands then help transform their learning experiences into professional practice.

NOTE:
New JRN Major: Multimedia Journalism (SPRING 2024)

As of Spring 2024, the Journalism and Media Studies Department has completed a redesign of the major to increase the number of audio and video courses. We have also updated some of the course names and descriptions to better reflect the curriculum.

Will This Impact Current Majors?

If you declared your major in Journalism before this, your requirements will REMAIN THE SAME. However, if you have fairly recently declared, we will be encouraging you to change to the new major to take advantage of these new audio and video options. We will be sending you information about this option and will be holding Zoom sessions in April to discuss the change.

Media Communication Studies (MCS)

MCS majors study the both the history and current state of media as well as the elements of professional communications in all its facets.  Subjects include ownership and industry structure; media genres; media platforms (from the telegraph to the mobile app to future innovations); government regulation of the media;  media globalization; issues of identity and diversity in the media, including multilingualism; and socio-cultural effects of media representation. This major is for you if you wish to pursue an academic future in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, or a career path in advertising, public relations, marketing, organizational management, or public policy.
