The mission is grounded in the firm belief that leadership can be learned and that it is a process, not a position. This is reflected in all our programs. We strive to provide students with opportunities to develop and enhance a personal philosophy of leadership that includes understanding of self, others, society, and acceptance of responsibilities inherent in community membership. The Herbert H. Lehman Center for Student Leadership Development aims to provide opportunities intentionally designed to:

  • Empower responsible, ethical student leadership
  • Enrich the community while promoting positive citizenship
  • Holistically develop students for success

Leadership Workshops

All our leadership workshops are delivered in 5 sessions, with a once per week meeting. Please use the Leadership Program Application form to register for our workshops. Meeting times and dates available on the form.

  • Introduction to Leadership Certificate Program
    Learn about essential concepts behind leadership! This 5-week program will help you identify your strengths and leadership identity while connecting these to your academic major and career goals. This workshop has a public speaking component, presented by a past TED Talk (TEDXCUNY) speaker to help you harness this valuable skill.
  • Leadership for All
    The goal of this five-week program is to help you reflect on your values, identity and philosophy to develop your leadership competencies. You will be taught how to create income-generating opportunities, connect with like-minded individuals, advocate for yourself and leverage your college experience for personal growth. The class is open to all Lehman students but there is a focus that to help Undocumented students.


Leadership Conferences and Retreats

As the name implies, this program aims to present students with essential concepts behind leadership. This 5-week program is structured to help students become change agents by identifying their strengths and leadership identity and connecting these with their academic major and career goals. Students are introduced to three main leadership models and connected to resources and key staff members on campus.

The program consists of five two-hour classes per semester. Classes are offered in three different sections on different days which allow students to choose a time that fits their schedule. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end the program.

The Leadership Weekend is open to students involved in leadership on campus. It is an engaging, fun, and informative three-day retreat held at The Edith Macy Conference Center. Students learn various leadership models and participate in team building.

The President and senior administrators of the college attend a portion of the retreat to share with students in a reflective dialogue. Throughout the weekend, student leaders also learn how to run effective meetings, manage fiscal resources responsibly, and apply their leadership skills beyond Lehman College.

Theoretical Foundation

Over the course of the semester, students will be exposed to different leadership styles and models including the Social Change Model, The Relational Leadership Model, and The Five Practices of Exemplary Leaders.
