Jessenia Fajardo, an English Honors student at Lehman College, has received a scholarship from the National Hispanic Business Group (NHBG), recognizing her academic excellence, resilience, and powerful personal journey toward a college degree.

Fajardo was one of only three recipients—and the only one from a CUNY institution—honored at NHBG’s 38th Annual Gala at Cipriani Wall Street. “It was truly unforgettable—such an honor to be part of it,” Fajardo said. “This scholarship is more than financial support. It’s a reminder that my story matters, and that all the hard work, even through the toughest circumstances, is worth it.”

As part of her application, Fajardo wrote an essay focused on resilience and transformation. She explained, “I wrote honestly about my journey—what I’ve survived, what I’m striving for, and how I see education not just as a personal achievement but as a tool for liberation and change. I wanted the readers to not only understand where I’ve been but to feel the urgency of where I’m going, and why that matters.”

The scholarship will help her cover both academic and personal expenses during her final semester, providing much-needed relief. “This award gives me something that’s often hard to come by—breathing room,” she said. “It allows me to focus on my coursework, my writing, and my next steps without being buried under financial stress.”

Assistant Professor Maeve Adams praised Fajardo. “Jessenia’s selection for this honor reflects achievements and talents the English Department at Lehman saw in her work from the beginning.”

Recently, Fajardo was appointed as an English Department Writing Fellow. This fall, while she mentors students just beginning their higher education journey, she will prepare to continue her own by applying to doctoral programs in English literature.
