The Lehman College and Community Band is set to welcome the spring season with a lively and diverse concert titled “Equinox.” The performance, which will feature several folksong-inspired works and other family-friendly selections for wind band, will take place on Sunday, March 16, at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre on the Lehman College campus. This event is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Professor Alan Hollander, the band will perform a varied program that spans both traditional and contemporary works. Highlights of the concert include pieces inspired by folk music from around the world, including Frank Ticheli’s Cajun Folk Songs II, William Grant Still’s Folk Suite for Band, and an arrangement by Jerry Nowak of the beloved folk tune Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair. Also featured will be El Camino Real: A Latin Fantasy by Alfred Reed, a vibrant and evocative work inspired by the eponymous ancient trail linking the 21 Spanish missions of California. The piece is a lively and colorful musical journey blending folk-like melodies with rich, cinematic orchestration, rhythmic vitality, and sweeping harmonies—capturing the spirit of the American Southwest’s landscape, culture, and Spanish history.

Other works on the program include:

  • Canterbury Chorale by Jan Van der Roost
  • Capriccio by James Barnes
  • Fanfare - The Benefaction from Sky and Mother Earth by Satoshi Yagisawa

“Equinox” is a concert for all ages, showcasing the talent of the ensemble through a rich tapestry of folk music traditions. The entire Lehman community is invited to attend.
