The Lehman College and Community Band opens its 2024-25 season with “Fall Frolic,” featuring works for symphonic wind band by Bernstein, Lecuona, Galante, Hanson, Press, Van der Roost, Verdi, and a seldom performed oboe concerto by Bernard Schulé, featuring soloist Dorothy Darlington. This performance, which is free and open to the public, will take place on Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m. in the Lovinger Theatre on the Lehman College campus.

Directed by Professor Alan Hollander, the program will include Giuseppe Verdi’s powerful and dramatic La Forza Del Destino Overture, Rossano Galante’s Sailing with Whales, a vivid and evocative composition that captures the grandeur of the ocean and the majesty of its gentle giants, and The Sun Will Rise Again by Philip Sparke, an uplifting and hopeful composition that conveys themes of resilience and renewal.

Also featured will be four dance-themed works:

  • Balkanya by Jan Van der Roost, a vibrant suite inspired by Balkan folk music showcasing traditional dance elements and colorful instrumentation
  • Wedding Dance by Jacques Press which captures the exuberance and festivity of a joyful wedding celebration
  • Three Dance Episodes from On the Town, a lively symphonic suite derived from Leonard Bernstein’s 1944 musical, highlighting the energy and vibrancy of New York City
  • Malagueña by Ernesto Lecuona, a dynamic and rhythmic piece inspired by traditional Spanish music, capturing the essence of flamenco dance and evoking rich cultural imagery.

Rounding out the program will be the seldom-performed Konzert für Oboe by Bernard Schulé, a lyrical and expressive work that highlights the oboe’s rich tonal qualities. With intricate melodies and varied textures, the piece combines classical influences with contemporary elements, showcasing the instrument’s agility and emotional depth, as well as the virtuosity of soloist Dorothy Darlington.
