Biography
Benjamin D. Scherrer
Benjamin D. Scherrer is Assistant Professor at Lehman College CUNY where he teaches courses on critical pedagogy and theory, science education, and the teacher in society. Before turning to academia, Dr. Scherrer was a public-school teacher and curriculum author. His scholarship emphasizes critical and community-based approaches to social-ecological catastrophe and representations of climate and the human in curriculum. Utilizing methods of countermapping, oral history recording, and archival study, his recent research projects theorize place and space through patterns of flooding with rivers and lakes. Dr. Scherrer’s scholarship also engages with critical approaches to so-called sustainable development and the coloniality of schooling in the Global South. He publishes in scholarly journals including Globalisation, Societies and Education; Comparative Education Review; Curriculum Inquiry; and Educational Studies. Dr. Scherrer is motivated by working with community and study groups through collaborative praxis. He publishes creative works with the study group, The Undercommons Constellation.
