National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)The Lehman College School of Education is currently accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The School of Education was previously accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and NCATE had a de facto consolidation on July 1, 2013, and officially became the CAEP.
Where We Are Now
In Spring 2021, Lehman’s School of Education had a successful Virtual “Site” Visit by the CAEP team. In Fall 2021, Lehman’s School of Education was re-accredited at both the initial and advanced educator preparation levels. The School received a perfect score, meeting all of CAEP’s five standards, with no stipulations and no areas for improvement (AFIs). Accreditation status is effective between Fall 2021 and Fall 2028.
Thinking Ahead
Thinking ahead, the deans, chairs and Educator Preparation Policy Council - - composed of faculty and administrators from across the campus - - continue to strengthen partnerships (both internal and external stakeholders), work diligently in creating a strategic plan to promote student-success and provide an experience of breadth and depth, with a clear focus on continuous improvement to meet all CAEP standards and components through multiple measures and a preponderance of evidence. The next accreditation onsite visit will take place in Spring 2028.
A Brief History
In October of 2002, Lehman College's School of Education was awarded initial NCATE Accreditation. Lehman was the first of the CUNY Colleges to receive this accreditation. Working to meet NCATE standards involved the redesign of all of our educator preparation programs and the development of a comprehensive Professional Development Network with local schools. In Spring 2007, the Division of Education completed its continuing accreditation visit. After a successful visit, in Fall 2007, the NCATE Unit Accreditation Board approved re-accreditation for Lehman's Professional Education Unit through Spring 2014. Following the incorporation of NCATE into CAEP, the School of Education was reviewed for continuing accreditation in Fall of 2021. The accredited status has been upheld until the next formal review to be conducted in 2028.
