Custom Programs for English Language Learners
Workforce Education is expert in customizing training for new New Yorkers whose first language is not English. Creating curricula that contextualize English within the training or field allows English as a second language speakers to become proficient and obtain licensure or credentials that would not be possible by training alone.
PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
Immigrant Nursing Program for English Language Learners
Integrated ESOL and NCLEX-RN preparation for foreign-trained nurses sponsored by NYC Dept of Small Business Services
Low-cost intensive ESL study for students aspiring to continue their education in English (50-60% scholarships available)
ESL integrated into CNA preparation enables English Language Learners to earn their NYS CNA License and begin working in NYC.
This proposed program would prepare English Language Learners to provide tax prep in their communities and begin their careers in accounting.
STUDENTS SPOTLIGHT
Claudia Hurtado, RN
Claudia Hurtado, RN obtained her NYS nursing license thanks to the NYC SBS-funded Immigrant Nursing Program at Lehman College. A bilingual nurse from Venezuela, Claudia was valedictorian of the first cohort to complete Lehman’s program. This intensive training allowed her to improve her English language skills and prepare for her current role as a registered nurse at Bellevue Hospital. Claudia is thrilled to take up her chosen profession again here in NYC and to be giving back to the community that provided this life-changing opportunity. Read More.
Alberto Mendoza Garcia, ESL Student
Alberto Mendoza Garcia arrived in the U.S. in 2010 from Guatemala. A schoolteacher by training, he had trouble finding meaningful employment and making connections in a country where he did not speak the language. After years of self-study, his wife encouraged him to take courses with Lehman College through the ESL Intensive Program. His experience with Lehman has left him feeling more confident and given him the ability to express himself more clearly
and understand the conversations around him. He was able to transition from a job as a janitor to working in shipping and fulfillment at a busy Manhattan electronics store and hopes to one day get certified to teach here in New York City.Read More
