IMPORTANT NEWS FOR JRN MAJORS

New JRN Major: Multimedia Journalism (Spring 2024)

As of Spring 2024, the Journalism and Media Studies Department has completed a redesign of the major to increase the number of audio and video courses. We have also updated some of the course names and descriptions to better reflect the curriculum.

Will This Impact Current Majors?

If you declared your major in Journalism before this, your requirements will REMAIN THE SAME. (They are listed below the redesigned major.) Note, the names of some of the required courses have changed, but the course number, eg. JRN 321 remains the same. These renamed courses will fulfill your requirements! So, JRN 321 Advanced Multiplatform Investigations: Exposing Inequity can be taken to fulfill JRN 321 Reporting II.

However, if you have fairly recently declared, we will be encouraging you to change to the new major to take advantage of these new audio and video options. We will be sending you information about this option and will be holding Zoom sessions in April to discuss the change.

JRN 42-43 Credit Major in Multimedia Journalism, B.A. (Spring 2024)

JRN majors dive right into multimedia journalism in the heart of New York City, producing real stories about real issues affecting people in the Bronx and beyond. Students study the best in journalism as a way to understand reality, assess knowledge and engage with the world. As a JRN major, you will embrace your passion for storytelling and fact-finding in our cutting-edge program, recently redesigned to incorporate more video and audio courses. Our students report the stories that need telling with experienced media professionals as their guides. Students publish news across: print, audio, video, and data. They learn how to blend aesthetics with information to create impactful web and social media design. Internships at leading news organizations in audio, video and online writing help transform their learning experiences into professional practice – and set them up to transform an industry that needs their voices and perspective. 

The Multimedia Journalism major consists of 42-43 credits taken in one of two concentrations: Journalism or Multilingual Media. Students must complete all core requirements before taking Area of Concentration courses.

Core Requirements (27 credits)

All students are required to complete the following courses:

(1) Concentration in Journalism (15 required credits)

JRN 491 and 492 are Honors capstone courses. To enroll in them, students must have
earned 90 credits or more, have a 3.5 GPA in the major and have Departmental
Permission. JRN 4910 and JRN 492 must be taken together. Students who are eligible
for the Honors Capstone may substitute JRN 491 and JRN 492 for JRN 481.
Note: Students must complete JRN 491 and its COREQ JRN 492 to be eligible for
Departmental Honors upon graduation.

(2) Concentration in Multilingual Media (18-19 required credits)

Foreign language component. Students must select a target language other than English and complete two of the following types of courses on translation, advanced writing, and phonetics in that language. For example, the student completes two courses from one target language group:

Italian:

JRN MAJOR (GRANDFATHERED)

Journalism, B.A. (42-43 Credit Major)

The Journalism major consists of 42-43 credits in one of two concentrations: Journalism or Multilingual Media. The total number of credits (42 or 43) depends on whether students participate in the Journalism Honors Program.

Note: All 300 and 400-level Journalism courses have either a specific course prerequisite, or require completion of 60 credits and department permission.
