Research at Lehman


Out of the fertile bed of the liberal arts tradition grows a research-rich enterprise that is revolutionizing STEM education; battling breast cancer; transforming theoretical and computational modeling; and employing molecular plant biology to unlock biomedical benefits. Emerging research in the areas of environmental science, materials science, and health sciences is on the horizon. With the opening of Lehman's $70 million teaching and research facility, the College has officially entered a new phase of its evolution. With approximately $16 million in externally funded research and sponsored programs coupled with a growing, research-active faculty, Lehman is well on its way to becoming the epicenter of research and creative scholarship in The Bronx.

Music Building PhotoIn FY2025, Lehman was awarded approximately $12.5 Million in new funding from public and private sources in support of scholarly research that impacts local schools, community organizations, small businesses, and healthcare networks in The Bronx and around the world.

Lehman's students come from 138 countries and speak more than 60 languages. Students travel to Greece, Chile, South Korea, and others to study and absorb these unique cultures.

STEM Research

STEM at Lehman PhotoResearch and discovery at Lehman respond to the critical needs of the 21st century. Faculty and students collaborate to solve cutting-edge problems that range from seeking new antibiotics, solving food insecurity, ensuring privacy in technology, discovery new materials, and understanding the mechanisms of cancer. Disciplines involves in STEM research include anthropology, biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, environmental science, earth and geospatial sciences, exercise science, health science, mathematics, physics, political science, psychology, sociology and social work. STEM researchers address both basic and applied sciences. STEM research at Lehman thrives on its intellectual challenges in a diverse community of novice and experienced researchers committed to ensuring that groups underrepresented in science are educated and empowered to contribute their perspectives to transformative discoveries.
