For 25 years,  has empowered Bronx students by providing educational programs that support high school completion and college readiness. Through its Bronx GEAR UP THRIVES program, The Bronx Institute is partnering with local high schools and the CUNY consortium to expand access to college-level courses.
“Our mission is to open doors for Bronx students, ensuring they have the tools and opportunities to thrive in college and beyond,” said Prof. Herminio Martinez, Executive Director of The Bronx Institute and a professor of Middle and High School Education. “CUNY CollegeNow, Lehman College, and Bronx Community College are helping us achieve that goal.”
A key initiative in support of Bronx GEAR UP THRIVES is the CUNY CollegeNow dual enrollment program. This program allows Bronx students to earn up to 15 college credits at Lehman College or Bronx Community College while still in high school, giving students a valuable head start for college.
Currently, 64 GEAR UP students are enrolled in CollegeNow courses, ranging from web development to business presentations. Students hail from schools like Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music, Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy International High School (KAPPA), In-Tech Academy, and Jonas Bronck Academy. The partnership not only helps students build essential skills for academic success but also helps them save on future college costs.
