
Pharmacy Technician Program
Pharmacy Technician with Externship: PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program
This comprehensive 60-hour program plus 80-hour externship will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the CPhT certification from PTCB. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies, and other health care settings – working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist.
You will learn medical terminology specific to pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions, and defining drugs by generic and brand names. In addition you will receive instruction in basic anatomy and physiology, disease states and pharmaceutical treatments, pharmacy terms and abbreviations, pharmacy laws and ethical practices, pharmacy calculations, basic pharmacology, sterile and non-sterile drug compounding, dose conversions, processing of prescriptions and medication orders, inventory control, medication error prevention strategies, workplace safety, and billing and reimbursement.
PREREQUISITES
> High School diploma or equivalency
> Foundational math skills*
*Please note that Pharmacy Technicians need strong foundational math skills in basic arithmetic, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, and proportions, and the ability to think through and solve problems. These skills will be applied in the program to learn how to accurately calculate and dispense medication dosages.
CERTIFICATE

CERTIFIED PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION (CPhT)
To be eligible for the Certified Pharmacy Technician exam (CPhT), a candidate must complete one of the following:
Pathway 1: A PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or completion within 60 days).
Pathway 2: Equivalent work experience as a pharmacy technician (min. 500 hours). This alternative path will serve experienced pharmacy technicians who were not in a position to attend a PTCB-recognized program.
