Puerto Rican Population in the Continental United States

The Puerto Rican population of the the United States increased every decade of the 20th century. The 1990 Census identified 2,728,000 Puerto living in the 50 states. There were Puerto Ricans living in every continental state of the Union and in Hawaii. However, 90 percent of the Puerto Rican population is concentrated in only 10 states, which are shown here in the map. The principal state of residence for Puerto Ricans is New York, which has over one million Puerto Ricans, followed by New Jersey and Florida.

In the past, the Puerto Rican population was even more concentrated than now in the state of New York, which was the principal port of entry for Puerto Ricans. However, there has taken place a process of dispersion of the Puerto Rican population to other states. This is due to the fact that Puerto Ricans are moving from New York to other states, and also to the fact that recent immigrants from Puerto Rico to the continental United States are choosing other states as their place of residence.
