This presentation examines one department’s journey to integrate decolonizing and antiracist principles across its structure, from curriculum design to admissions practices. Faced with the challenges of academic freedom, faculty preferences, and the legacy of canonical materials, this initiative reflects a comprehensive effort to create a learning environment that better supports and represents students from historically marginalized communities. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) and decolonial frameworks, the department engaged in a collaborative process, forming a faculty-student group that developed practical tools to drive change—including a curriculum assessment template, revised mission statements, and antiracist training modules. 

Attendees will gain insights into the successes and complexities of implementing these practices, including how to address entrenched biases, build consensus, and confront long-standing academic traditions. A template for assessing curricula will be shared to illustrate practical steps for fostering inclusivity. This session invites faculty and administrators to reflect on how decolonizing and antiracist approaches can enrich their own programs, particularly through intentional shifts in language, representation, and curriculum content.
