NSF-CMACS Workshop

January 6, 2010 – January 26, 2010

The "Computational Modeling and Analysis of Complex System" research program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, will sponsor a workshop for undergraduates interested in the use of mathematical and computational tools for modeling biological systems. Such models have important applications in understanding and treating diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. The workshop will take place during the winter intersession (January 6 to January 26, 2010), from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays. Students attending the three-week workshop will receive $1000.

Distinguished faculty from Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh, and the City University of New York will present current ideas in modeling complex systems. Students will be introduced to concepts in mathematical and computer modeling and in biological systems, and will work together in small groups to develop their own models of biological systems, supported by easy-to-use tools.

Students must have taken either Calculus I and II and Introductory Programming or the introductory courses in biology and chemistry. Preference will be given to juniors enrolled in a CUNY senior college with majors in mathematics, computer science, biology, or chemistry; however, all CUNY students are welcome to apply.

Important Dates

  • Application Due: October 30, 2009
  • Notification of Acceptance: November 2, 2009
