Biography
J. Bret Maney teaches courses in American studies, the digital humanities, and the practice and theory of translation at Lehman College and the CUNY Graduate Center. He is the translator of Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s The River in the Belly (Deep Vellum, 2021), which was a finalist for the Luschei Prize for African Poetry and the Sarah Maguire Prize for Poetry in Translation. He has also translated and co-edited a bilingual scholarly edition of Guillermo Cotto-Thorner’s early novel of Latinx New York, Manhattan Tropics/Trópico en Manhattan (Arte Público, 2019), which was supported by a PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grant and won an International Latino Book Award.
Maney's criticism has appeared in American Quarterly; American Literary Realism; CENTRO: Journal of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies; Studies in American Naturalism, where his article won the Robert H. Elias Essay Prize; The Journal of Modern Literature; Latinx Talk; The F. Scott Fitzgerald Review; Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy; and Teaching Literature in Translation: Pedagogical Contexts and Reading Practices (Routledge, 2022), among other publications. His literary translations of poetry and prose from the French and Spanish have been awarded the Gulf Coast Translation Prize and the Asymptote Close Approximations Prize (runner-up), and have appeared in many journals, including Exchanges, Asymptote, Small Axe, Words Without Borders, Gulf Coast, Columbia Journal, The Common, and The Brooklyn Rail. Maney is the co-creator and curator of the public digital humanities projects The Literary Bronx and The Latinx Catskills.
